Burano is one of the three main islands of the Venetian lagoon, along with Murano and Torcello. Voted one of the 10 most colourful cities in the world, it's easy to see why as soon as you arrive: the walls of Burano's typical colourful houses create a mix of hues and vibrant colours, giving rise to numerous legends and the impression of having stepped back in time.

The island of Burano is easily reached by taking line 12 from the Murano Faro stop (just under 1 kilometre from the flat).

Passing through Burano it is imperative to stop and buy the famous "esse buranei", typical sweets in the shape of the letter "S"; they can be found all year round in pastry shops and, despite their popular origin, are offered as a dessert on restaurant menus. There are many different versions, such as doughnut-shaped, in which case they are called "bussolà", or with raisins or chocolate chips.

If you want to stop for lunch and want to taste fish with a capital F, you can stop at the famous Trattoria al Gatto Nero (4.5 on TripAdvisor with more than 2000 reviews) and also included in the renowned Michelin Guide.

The island is easy to get around in a couple of hours, but it all depends on how long the colourful houses will keep you within their walls. Don't miss the island's Leaning Bell Tower, which is tilted on its axis by 1.83 metres due to subsidence. The top of the bell tower has always been topped by an angel, which fell during a storm in 1867; in its place is now an iron cross.
